Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island

Choose a museum along Fifth Avenue, the Yorkville riverfront at Carl Schurz Park, or a separate trip to Roosevelt Island. The island is a distinct community across the river. The Met, Cooper Hewitt and Blackwell House offer different ways to explore art and the built landscape.

Understanding Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island

Carl Schurz Park’s naming connects it with Yorkville’s German-American community. Its Gracie Mansion site passed from a country estate into city ownership; the house later became the mayoral residence.

The park’s waterfront design also reflects twentieth-century road construction. Its John Finley promenade sits over the FDR Drive roof deck, showing how a public landscape was maintained above transport infrastructure.

Roosevelt Island has a different built history from the mainland museum district. Its landmarks include the 1796 Blackwell farmhouse and later institutional buildings, including the surviving tower of an 1839 asylum and an 1856 smallpox hospital ruin. The tram, opened in 1976 as an interim connection, became a lasting part of the island’s transport.

Planning a visit

Choose the Fifth Avenue museums, Yorkville waterfront or island first. RIOC’s tram connects Roosevelt Island with East 60th Street and Second Avenue on the mainland. An island visit is a separate journey from the museum and park stops; check current service before traveling.

The Met identifies step-free entrances at Fifth Avenue and 81st Street and through its garage at 80th Street. RIOC describes accessible tram cabins; check the full journey and chosen landmark separately.

Visitor update

Cooper Hewitt lists its second- and third-floor galleries as temporarily closed during exhibition changeover. Its garden is closed October 20–26 and November 5–7, 2026. The Met also lists several gallery renovations; check the works or spaces you want before travel.
