About Financial District
George Washington took the presidential oath in 1789 at the original Federal Hall. That building was demolished in 1812; the present structure opened as a customs house in 1842. A statue on its steps marks the approximate inauguration site.
The Broad Street Stock Exchange building and nearby Wall Street facades show the later financial district?s monumental architecture.
